The Impact of Wrongful Conviction – An Exoneree Panel Discussion
April 11 - 7:00-9:00 PM – Fitzpatrick Lecture Hall

Posted: February 8
Collaboration with Ann (Lappan) Garant, Managing Attorney, Cooley Innocence Project.  Mary is a former student of mine and daughter of Tom and Mary Lappan.  As Managing Attorney for the Cooley Innocence Project in Lansing, she recently received a grant through the PNC Foundation for community outreach and education. The grant involves holding panel events featuring our exonerees and possibly other members from the legal community in areas of Michigan where there isn't a large presence of innocence work or any established Conviction Integrity Units. They want to educate areas where they might not be familiar with the Innocence Project or understand the causes/impacts of wrongful convictions. They held their first grant-associated event in Grand Rapids on Wrongful Conviction Day in October. It was a big success and received a lot of great feedback. They plan on holding an event in the Tri-City area in early 2024. They will be expanding their reach and bringing the program to Alpena. Matt Wojda is her legal contact with the Alpena County Bar Association. Here is a link to Cooley Innocence Project. This event will be remote accessible – the link is forthcoming. This is not an ACC-sponsored event.
