Ropes Course

A ropes course is a system of challenging outdoor personal development and team building activities. ACC’s Ropes Course consists of low elements or “obstacles” which are either on the ground or a few feet above the ground.

Each of the elements and activities is completed through the application of team work, communication, cooperation, and group initiative. Success is achieved only if all participants contribute – regardless of athleticism, ability, or popularity. No one is obligated to participate; it is “challenge by choice.”

Ropes Course FacilitatorsACC’s Ropes Course is directed by the Alpena Volunteer Center. Groups utilizing the course are guided by trained facilitators who ensure safety and reinforce teamwork concepts to ensure successful accomplishment of team objectives. Elements included in ACC’s course are the Mohawk Walk, Tension Traverse, Wild Woosey, Minefield, T.P. Shuffle, Nitro-Crossing, Giant Spider Web, Port Hole, Giant’s Finger, Whale Watch, and Muse.

The course usage fee is $3 for students (under 18) and $5 for adults. The facilitator fee is $25/hour. ACC’s course is open to ages 8 and up and may be reserved by calling the Volunteer Center at 989.358.7271

The ACC Ropes Course can take you from “GROUP” to “TEAM!”

The Volunteer Center coordinates the following programs:

Volunteer MatchingLinking volunteers with community requests for assistance. Just a few of the current requests for assistance:

  • If you are looking for professional experience, new skills, networking or career options, consider volunteering for Shelter, Inc. Shelter provides support for victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse, and utilize volunteers for a wide variety of tasks. Contact Shirley, at 356.6265, for information.
  • Area Girl Scouts need friendly adults to work as Girl Scout leaders. Leaders can work with a traditional troop or just run a single event or series on a topic they like. Training, mentoring, and support is provided. You don't have to have a girl who is a scout; you don't have to have been a scout yourself; you don't even have to be a female! Please consider this rewarding opportunity to lead girls in our community who benefit from scouting - from you!
  • Bay View Drop-In Center seeks volunteers to socialize with clients by sharing crafts skills, computer skills, playing games and cards, and just visiting.
  • NEMCSA is looking for Parent Aide Volunteers to conduct routine communication with parents to assist with a variety of parenting skills.
  • Tendercare Alpena is looking for someone to read to residents once/week in the early evening.
  • Huron Humane Society has openings for volunteers who love our four-legged friends.
  • Turning Brook is always looking for volunteers who like to read, play games, play an instrument, sing, or visit with residents at Turning Brook. Pet visits are always welcome. Please contact Angie at 354.4200.
  • Community Tech is a nonprofit organization that recycles computer components providing functional machines to consumers for a nominal fee. They welcome volunteers, regardless of computer knowledge. Anyone able to use a screwdriver can help!
  • The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary has many interesting and fun positions for volunteers.
  • Hospice Angelic Care in Tawas has openings for volunteers in a variety of capacities, including patient support, caregiver respite, office support, and community projects. Please call 877.362.4141 for more information.

Christmas Wish ListThe Christmas Wish List is a charitable holiday program that has become a tradition in our area. Through this program the Volunteer Center matches wishes of hundreds of local children with generous donors who fulfill them. Gift wishes are usually for clothing, household items, or toys. Donors may elect to purchase a single gift, several, or a whole family's requests. Cash may be donated for gifts if donors prefer not to shop. Volunteers and staff purchase all remaining requests with donated funds.

School-Success professionals, teachers, and social workers in Alpena, Alcona, Montmorency, and Presque Isle counties submit families to the Volunteer Center's Christmas Wish List. Those submitting are in a position to verify need, obtain specific gift requests, and maintain anonymity. The Volunteer Center does not accept submissions from individuals. The Christmas Wish List collaborates with the Salvation Army, Vietnam Vets Toys for Kids, Shelter Inc, and other groups to eliminate duplication of services.
